The IMAGE Center is thrilled to share that our Board Chair, Janice Jackson, was honored with the Judy Heumann Advocacy Award at the 2025 National Council on Independent Living (NCIL) Conference in Washington, D.C. This national award recognizes extraordinary leaders who embody the spirit and impact of Judy Heumann, a trailblazer in the disability rights movement.

Janice’s lifelong dedication to advancing access, independence, and quality of life for people with disabilities has touched countless lives. A college professor, nonprofit founder, Presidential Citizens Medal honoree, and Secretary of the Maryland Statewide Independent Living Council, she has been a driving force for change in Maryland and beyond.

In her acceptance speech, Janice used the powerful metaphor of “Boots on the Ground” to call on all of us to unite and take action so people with disabilities can fully participate in every aspect of life. Her message was as inspiring as it was urgent, reminding us that progress comes when we work together.

In addition to celebrating Janice’s achievement, The IMAGE Center had a strong presence at the NCIL Conference. Our staff participated in the annual march to the U.S. Capitol, attended informative workshops, and connected with advocates nationwide — all part of our ongoing commitment to the independent living movement.
