At The IMAGE Center, we believe in the power of communication and inclusion. Today, we are excited to share a special message from Usherla DeBerry, Director of the Maryland Governor’s Office of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, reminding us of the importance of understanding both American Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf culture.

In Usherla’s words, “Understanding ASL and Deaf culture is crucial for promoting effective communication, breaking down barriers, and fostering inclusion. Learning ASL is vital, but equally important is embracing Deaf culture, which helps prevent misconceptions and fosters a deeper connection to the Deaf community’s values, traditions, and perspectives.”

Let’s join hands in recognizing and respecting the linguistic identity of the Deaf community, and in supporting Governor Wes Moore’s mission to ‘leave no one behind.'”

Thank you to Usherla and the ODHH for this important message!
