Medicare Open Enrollment: Ensure Your Coverage Works for You

Medicare Open Enrollment is here! The IMAGE Center of Maryland urges Medicare-eligible individuals with disabilities to review and adjust their coverage before December 7, 2024, to ensure it meets their needs and budget.

The IMAGE Center of Maryland encourages people with disabilities who are Medicare-eligible to take advantage of Medicare Open Enrollment, running until December 7, 2024. This is a critical opportunity to ensure that your health care coverage matches your specific needs, budget, and circumstances for the coming year.

Why Open Enrollment is Important for You

Living with a disability often means unique health care needs and potentially higher out-of-pocket costs. During Medicare Open Enrollment, you can:

  • Switch between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage Plans to access better services, including additional benefits such as transportation or home care supports.
  • Enroll in or change a Part D drug plan, which is especially useful if you rely on medications that may now be covered under a different plan.
  • Find specialized plans that offer lower costs or better accessibility features, such as in-home support or specialized rehabilitation services.

Accessible Help Through SHIP

The State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) offers free, confidential, and accessible one-on-one counseling to help you navigate your options. SHIP counselors are trained to address the specific needs of people with disabilities, including:

  • Comparing plans to find one that covers essential health services and medications.
  • Assisting with applications for financial assistance, such as Medicare’s Extra Help program, which can reduce prescription drug costs.
  • Helping you understand appeals if you encounter billing issues.

You can access SHIP services virtually or in person. Call 410-887-2059 in Baltimore County, or visit aging.maryland.gov to find your local SHIP office.

What to Bring to Your Appointment

Whether meeting with a SHIP counselor or reviewing your plan on Medicare.gov, it’s helpful to have the following:

  • Your Medicare card and any other insurance information.
  • A list of medications you take, along with their dosage.
  • Details about your health care providers and any specialists you visit.

Make Changes Now to Ensure Coverage by January 1

The changes you make during Open Enrollment will take effect January 1, 2024. Even if you are happy with your current plan, reviewing your options ensures you aren’t missing out on better coverage or savings. Plans often change their provider networks, costs, or benefits—so it pays to take a look.

If you need help, Medicare’s customer service line at 1-800-MEDICARE is available 24/7, or visit your local SHIP office for accessible counseling tailored to your needs.  Don’t wait! Make sure your coverage supports you in living your fullest, healthiest life in 2024. For more details, visit the Maryland Department of Aging’s Medicare Open Enrollment page
