It is with great regret that we announce the cancellation of the highly anticipated community and fundraising event, “The Big Bike Build,” due to unforeseen inclement weather conditions.
The event, which was scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 23 at Stevenson University, aimed to bring together members of our community for a day of fun and camaraderie in support of the Volunteers for Medical Engineering (VME) program. We were excited to engage with our volunteers, sponsors, and participants in this worthwhile endeavor. However, after careful consideration and monitoring of weather forecasts, we have determined that the safety and well-being of all involved must take precedence.
The anticipated inclement weather conditions pose a significant risk to the safety of our participants, volunteers, and staff. As such, we believe it is in the best interest of everyone involved to cancel the event.
We understand the disappointment and inconvenience this cancellation may cause and share in your frustration. We want to express our sincere appreciation for the support, dedication, and enthusiasm of all those who were looking forward to The Big Bike Build.
In the meantime, we are committed to ensuring all the participating children receive their bikes. We will keep you updated through our official channels regarding the bike deliveries and of any additional information. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us at 410-982-6311.
We would like to express our deepest gratitude to our host, Stevenson University, and to event sponsors and supporters: Constellation Energy; Venable, LLP; Kelly Benefits Strategies; The League for People with Disabilities; Baltimore Community Foundation; The Bryn Mawr School; Handup Gloves; Brain Injury Association of Maryland; Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated – 2nd District; and Red Robin Owings Mills.
We thank you for your understanding and look forward to your continued support.

You’re invited to be part of VME’s largest-ever endeavor!
Volunteers for Medical Engineering (VME) has hosted many Bike Clinics in our 40-year history, but The Big Bike Build is our most ambitious event to date!
The Big Bike Build will provide 25 customized bicycles for local kids with disabilities – in a single day!
In just one day, volunteer teams of engineers, engineering students, occupational therapists, and physical therapists will complete 25 adaptive bicycles – each one uniquely customized for a local child with a disability. And to make this a true celebration for our families and friends, The Big Bike Build will include live music, great food, family-friendly activities, and more!
But in order to accomplish this feat, we need your help! VME is presently recruiting over 100 volunteers to serve on the build teams and others to provide additional support throughout the day. We’re also seeking Corporate and Individual Sponsors to help make The Big Bike Build a reality. Sponsorship is a great way to support the cause, align your brand with socially responsible efforts, and create a lasting impression that extends beyond the event!
