Ms. Sunshine King

INSTRUCTOR: Ms. Sunshine King

Ms. Sunshine life was turned upside down on Nov. 6, 2004. She was attacked by her husband who shot her four times. One bullet entered her right jaw and exited from the back of her neck. The other bullet entered her spine. She is now a survivor of Domestic Violence with a spinal cord injury.  She later became a hurricane Katrina Survivor in 2005. As time went by, she gained more strength mentally, physically, and spiritually, which allowed her to keep her spirits up. With great determination she became an entrepreneur of Sunshine Project H.E.L.P (Healing. Educating. Loving. People), WheelPower Dance and Fitness, and Sunshine Models on Wheels. She is an advocate, certified Christopher Reeve Peer Mentor, motivational speaker, professional dancer, professional model, entertainment coach, and wellness practitioner licensed and certified in massage therapy, reflexology, iridology, 3rd degree Reiki practitioner, Qi Gong instructor, EFT/TFT Tapping practitioner, Zumba, and Zumba Gold instructor.

Presented by the Public Health Workforce at Maryland Centers for Independent Living. This collaborative event has been funded by Maryland Public Health funds.

Living with a disability (or more than one) is a journey filled with ups and downs. There are plenty of successes to celebrate, but everyday life presents challenges that have to be overcome and can sometimes get us down. Through all the ups and downs, there’s nothing quite as empowering as the realization that there are other people who get it. Join us as we hear from a mental health professional on the unique power of support for people with disabilities and how we can leverage that support to make a positive difference for ourselves and others.

Speaker: Mirranda Williams, MSW

Mirranda Williams is a social worker, mental health professional, and disability rights advocate who specializes in empowering people to adjust to their disabilities in mentally healthy ways. She has founded InspEYEre Consulting, a dedicated platform providing resources and support groups for mental health issues among seniors living with blindness. Ms. Williams’ mission is to change society’s perception of individuals with disabilities, particularly focusing on empowering individuals and seniors who are blind to maintain independence and challenge the notion of helplessness. Through professional development training, she fosters empathy and dispels misconceptions. Additionally, she currently works directly with seniors losing vision as a case worker with the Maryland Division of Rehabilitation Services (DORS).
